Telelesson Title:  Owl Pellets

Total Time:  60 minutes

Lesson Overview
The students will dissect owl pellets.  They will look for the various bones that they can find in the owl pellet.  They will use a bone identification sheet to help with this process.  The children will write about their findings in their  journals. It will help the children learn about the food chain and how an owl survives.

Standards Based Goal
1.  The students will understand how species depend on one another and on the environment for survival.
2.  The student will maintain a personal writing journal.

Student Objectives
1.  The students will watch an introductory video tape on owl pellets.
2.  Using a bone identification sheet, the students will identify the different bones in the owl pellet.
3.  The students will understand the importance of species depending on each other and the food chain.
4.   The children will journal about their findings.

Prerequisite Skills
The students will be familiar with their Science textbook, Scott Foresman Discover Science and be able to use the table of contents.

Initial Introduction.

Children at their desks.

:15 Video tape on Owl Pellets. Children at their desks.
:25 Using their bone identification page, the students will identify the bones that they find. Children with their Science partner.
:35 Question time about the bones found. Children in a large group with teacher direction.
:60 Documentation time in their journals about their findings. Children at their desks.  Student journals available.
